Rick VanHoose, class of 1962; Steve Fritz, class of 1964, Don Bernhardt, class of 1974, and Ned and Marilyn Conder, who did not attend North High but are Hoover’s friends.

The goal is to reach the $75,000 in donations by June 30. The money will be presented to the EVSC Foundation, a partner in the project, to benefit North music students. As of Friday night, the group has reached 55 percent of the goal, raising slightly more than $41,000 since the campaign began in early April.

Whitehouse stated Hoover is just glad it will help the kids, expand the school’s musical productions and ensure it is available for many years.

“I think he may be speechless for the first time,” she joked. “We want this to be a legacy for him. We’re not trying to keep it a secret, he knows too many people, so to keep it a secret would be too difficult.”

Hoover, longtime North educator, choral director and noted local musician, will be 81in June. He was born and raised in Evansville, and employed with the EVSC for 48 years, working at North from 1956-1980 and at Harrison High School as a counselor from 1980-2001, and the choir director at Trinity United Methodist Church for 40 years. He thanked the committee for what its doing, and attributed his successes to the support of his former instructors and parents who inspired and influenced him.

“My approach was to stay in the background and put the students in the foreground,” he said. “It was quite a surprise, and I was very humbled.”

The committee is mailing forms to North alumni around the country, interested individuals, companies and family foundations in the Evansville community. All donations are tax-deductible within IRS guidelines because the EVSC is a partner in the campaign. People interested making contributions can pay in one lump sum or in five-year installments.

Whitehouse, executive director of the local medical society, had Hoover as a music instructor throughout high school for chorus and concert choir, and he directed the musical “Camelot.” He also directed her at Trinity.

“I still call him Mr. Hoover even though we’re both adults, and he states I don’t have to, but yes I do,” Whitehouse said. “We’re thrilled to have an opportunity to do this for a very special man, instructor and mentor. Jerry Hoover defined excellence and championed the efforts of his students while serving as choral director at North High, and the entire community benefited from the musical programs and productions that took place while he was at the school. We can’t think of a better way of honoring Mr. Hoover than to name the new performing arts center after him.”

Hoover will be notified of every person who contributes to the effort, but the specific amounts will be kept confidential. According to Whitehouse, contributions to-date have come from local residents and alumni who did not participate in music productions, but enjoyed the productions and hope to see them continued in the future. Once the goal is reached, the committee plans to organize a formal dedication, tentatively scheduled for fall.

Hoover was a member of the original North faculty. He stated he has a love for music and continues to enjoy teaching private lessons.

“I watched that school grow from the time it started until the time I left. It has a lot of memories,” he said. “And we were so fortunate because part of our success was the wonderful parent backing and great, great students who were talented; and I think that was part of what made it so much fun.”

Sports-centric dramas are certainly changing the game in the TV industry, which has been largely monopolised by the reality and crime drama genres. Friday Night Lights, Luck, Coach, Sports Night and One Tree Hill are the success stories so far. And now Necessary Roughness gets to shine in the playing field with Marc Blucas and Mehcad Brooks taking the leads in the hit series, writes Debashine Thangevelo.

GIVEN the whole “art imitates life” cliché, it is not surprising to find Hollywood’s writers drawing inspiration from its rabid sport viewers.

That certainly explains the magnetism of shows such as Friday Night Lights, Luck, Coach, Sports Night and One Tree Hill. Some even feature top actors like Dustin Hoffman and Craig T Nelson.

Necessary Roughness didn’t go the stereotypical route, though. At the heart of the story is Doctor Danielle “Dani” Santino (played by Callie Thorne). Following the collapse of her marriage after her husband’s affair, a cash-strapped Dani becomes the therapist for the New York Hawks football team. She’s renowned for her “tough love” approach – akin to Dr Phil – and because of her reputation, other athletes, politicians, musicians and prominent celebrities seek her advice.

With her life back on track, we take a look at the two main men in her life and their respective journeys…

His role as Matthew “Matt” Donnally, the New York Hawks’ general manager (he was promoted from athletic trainer), hits a tiny close to home for the actor.

He was a promising basketball player throughout high school and at Wake Forest University, and it was his dream to make it into the NBA (The National Basketball Association), but that didn’t materialise. So he decided to become a lawyer, but had a change of heart and became an actor instead.

With Necessary Roughness, he is thrust back into that adrenalin-charged sporting environment and is flooded with nostalgia.

Blucas admits: “Usually, as actors, we want to respond to the exact opposite of who we are. The crazy psychopath and sociopath and ex-cons. In this case, though, the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

“My first passion was basketball, I got to play in college and had a chance to play professionally overseas. So when I read this script, I realised I would get to dip my toe back into that world.”

Thorne, his co-star and love interest in the show, is 1.55m tall and he is 1.9m, which makes it rather interesting when it comes to shooting their scenes.

A fan of Rocky, he sheds light on the transformation of his character, saying: “In season one, I didn’t have that much of a conflict with the character. I was the voice of reason, that sounding board for Dani, and we really got to know the most about TK and Dani. So, for me this year, it’s a chance to learn a tiny more about Matt. We have an interesting, fun arc going on.

“But from the production side, the things that we’ve talked about since the pilot are all starting to happen now, so it’s fun to see a shift of power and relationships. I’m the boss now. It has been a pretty dynamic shift.”

On Thorne being the protagonist in a male-dominated series, he comments: “The pieces were there for Callie to be intimidated. It’s this fish out of water story where you have this woman who is recently divorced with children who is trying to figure out her life.

“She gets thrust into this world of testosterone. It’s a pro-sports, bump chests and hit each other type of place. A world she is not even close to being in. I don’t think it was ever an issue, on the set and off.”

Heck, at least Blucas gets to live his sports dream (well, kind of) via this series!

Terrence “TK” King – the New York Hawks’ star player

AS far as his TV résumé goes, he is still in the infancy of his career. But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been making an impression in TV series such as Desperate Housewives, Dollhouse, True Blood, The Game and Alcatraz.

Like Blucas, he could have gone the whole basketball star route, but he turned down a basketball scholarship from Ivy League schools to attend the University of Southern California before leaving to pursue an acting career.

And the platform Brooks had as an underwear model for huge brands such as Calvin Klein certainly helped.

Easy on the eye, with that chiselled body and six-pack, he has stolen the show as Terrence “TK” King, the star player for the New York Hawks.

As with any sporting hero, he hasn’t been impervious to the pitfalls of stardom. Dani has been trying to keep his debauched lifestyle from affecting his game and career. In season two, he struggles to deal with being shot and spirals out of control.

Of his loose-cannon character, he says: “I love, love, love it. The most fun I have ever had on a set. Being a loose cannon is one of my favourite type of roles. It’s like Jack Nicholson in About Schmidt. Not that I’m comparing myself to Jack Nicholson, but it’s that same type of character, and it’s fun.”

In playing TK, the 32-year-old actor states he “stole from Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx and Will Smith”.

“You take from the best. I got into this business because I watched and liked people like Eddie Murphy and Will Smith. I just like what they do. I have been a goofball and a class clown my entire life, so it just fit.”

While he is regarded as a sex symbol, he states he is a nerd: “I go home and watch Rachel Maddow and read books and work on my music. And I do a bunch of other stuff, but I don’t think of myself as sexy.”

By the way, aside from playing the guitar, he sings and raps.

Being shot at the end of season one really threw TK. And the domino effect of that certainly changes the playing field for him.

He shares: “He’s no different to most people who get shot. It puts a halt on all the progress you’ve been making, and you know, TK got to a place where he was comfortable in his new skin and stopped being so self-sabotaging. And then, all of a sudden, the world took a s*** on him again. He thought: ‘Well, that’s me. No matter how hard I try to climb out of this thing, things keep happening to me.’ And that’s hard to portray. And then there’s the physicality of it.

“So he gets a tiny manic about coming back and has PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), which is a very important issue.”

Google will be selling a Galaxy S4 with 16 gigabytes of internal memory for $649 in the U.S. That’s $20 more than T-Mobile US charges for the stock phone. Google’s version will work on T-Mobile’s and AT&T’s network, with support for the latest and fastest “LTE” data network technology.
