Great Scot's bold TV adventure

DARREN McMullen is going global. The 30-year-old Scot has slowly but surely racked up a list of worldwide TV credits.

McMullen’s huge Aussie break came in 2010 when he hosted Channel 7′s Minute to Win It. He also presented Nine’s Commercial Breakdown and MTV’s The Lair.

Last year, McMullen hosted US reality show Love in the Wild. He also fronted UK magic show The Magicians as well as the British version of Minute to Win It.

Now McMullen is watched by millions of Aussies every week on The Voice along with coaches Seal, Delta Goodrem, Joel Madden and Keith Urban.

You’ve bounced from one country to another of late. How have all these hosting gigs happened?

It (hosting all over the world) has always been the goal for me. I’ve wanted to have a base in every English-speaking country in the world. Not as some form of world domination. I want my job to be the basis of my main love in life, which is travel.

You were the last person signed for The Voice. How did it come about?

I phoned Mark Fennessy, who runs (production company) Shine, when I first saw the US version of The Voice. I said, “I have just seen the most astonishing show – the sort of show I’ve wanted to host my entire career.” He said, “I’ve just purchased it.” I said, “We need to talk.” Then it became a matter of trying to get out of my US contract. I’m meant to be filming the second series of Love in the Wild in the Dominican Republic right now.

What has it been like working with Seal, Delta, Joel and Keith?

Seal is the enlightened guru figure. Everything that comes out of his mouth is something that Yoda would say. Delta is an absolute sweetheart. Joel is hilarious. I worked with Joel years ago but I’d forgotten how funny he is. I do not think I’ve met a nicer man than Keith in my life. He is so down to earth – a grounded, normal Aussie bloke. Before The Voice, Keith was more famous in Australia for his marriage to Nicole Kidman than his music.

In America he is such a superstar. It is bizarre that over here people speak of him as Mr Nicole Kidman. She is at every show supporting him. It is really lovely to watch – that you can be normal living in this crazy fantasy world.

We have seen The Voice change the lives of contestants including Rachael Leahcar, Karise Eden and Lakyn Heperi …

The very first time I met the contestants was when I was surprising them at home or their place of work with an invitation to come to the blind auditions. Quite often I ended up spending the rest of the afternoon with them, getting to know their entire family. It is such a beautiful thing when you see these people’s dreams being realised.
