Real Valley Stories: The Unfinished Booth

Part 6 in an irregular series of stories from my 13 years in Silicon Valley.第5部分讨论了 tradeoffs of speed, quality and budgeting.

I spent virtually all my time behind the desk.关系主要是通过电子邮件或电话,or vendors could come to our office for the occasional pitch, onsite meeting,or creative review.在某一时刻,我一定没有离开加利福尼亚长达十年之久,是为了度假,trade show,or any other reason. That all changed in 2004,当一位同事突然离职时,担任了事件经理的角色,the luck of running the entire experience fell to me - from pre-show promotion to materials transport,处理和建立铅收集和管道跟踪。.

Our company, well before I had taken over the role,选择了一个400平方英尺的展览空间,with a standard 20 foot by 20 foot configuration. 以前的事件经理一直在围绕着展示节目策划一个无证的秘密程序,so I set out weeks in advance to make sure we booked and shipped everything to Southern California in time for the important show..

A month or so ahead of Siggraph, the operations manager and I visited the warehouse to see the booth materials for ourselves. But the boxes containing the booth and its pieces were stacked high above us.Between us both,我们选了箱子,里面肯定有墙,poles and signage needed,他们很好地去了,所有的人都不要求仓库老板用叉车把他们拿下来进行进一步的检查。As far as we knew,那是真的。But come the day before show start,I quickly learned different..

As most trade show veterans know, the day (or multiple days) before an event starts, event planners and experienced union workers band together to assemble trade show booths, from unrolling carpeting and laying electrical,支撑标牌并设置欢迎区域。This time,当机组人员开始在我的展位开始时,they examined the instructions, glanced at the boxes we had brought, and quickly determined it wasn't all there. They gestured to me,we looked two or three more times, and it was obvious we had basically shipped half a booth, and the rest of the booth was in boxes hundreds of miles north,in the Bay Area..

不是好事,considering securing space at the trade show was tens of thousands of dollars, and revenue from the show should be much higher. So I called another colleague back at headquarters, who zipped back to the warehouse to find the missing pieces, and had them put on a truck immediately,开始向南驶向洛杉矶。The boxes,in time, would find us,不知怎的,我们会做到的。So the union team and I caught up and decided they would go work on other booths until our equipment came..

The morning turned to afternoon.Afternoon turned to evening. No good news.唯一的更新来自卡车司机,who called to say he had hit traffic from an accident on I-5,which would make him hours later.联盟队,与此同时,called me,and said they had completed all other work, and that we were now on the clock, with or without our booth.

Mthe night before the show,第二天早上8点开门the truck containing the missing boxes with our missing pieces arrived at the convention center. Our small team of union workers and I worked around since-locked doors and the array of quietly finished booths to get started. They were now on overtime pay,显然,and probably on double overtime..

As the booth started to take shape,大约1点A。Mthere was more discussion and commotion and clear confusion among the team - as they couldn't find the largest piece of the entire booth,a vertical pole which supported a top branding sign and the right wing of the booth itself. By 2 a.M,approaching 2:30,the booth looked like a booth, only without our brand name at the top.Instead,it just said"Network Storage",which confused attendees to no end in the days ahead..

Thanking each of the workers, and giving them each an equal share of all the cash I had personally pulled out of my own money from the ATM,我认为那天晚上结束了,and wrapped up just five hours before we were supposed to open. One of the men,not wanting me to walk back to my hotel that late at night, gave me a lift home..

I was at our booth in uniform ready to greet customers,to the odd stares of those neighboring booths who had finished their setup days with our area being a blank square of carpet.More than one person came by to ask what had happened as our booth had seriously popped up overnight. in the back of his truck, wrapped in carpeting,而在所有匆忙的状态下,卸货,he had overlooked it.

I thought about it for a brief second, and said no.One night was enough.不知何故,we finished the event in fair shape,虽然并不完美,and somehow,I didn't see any ill effects of the incident in my job.But it was something I didn't want to experience again - a perfect example of needing to be fully prepared and adequately making sure that no one person,尤其是渴望离开公司的人,拥有成功所需的所有信息。 .

Bring 188金宝博亚洲 to Events,Ditch Power Cords

Sitting here at the技术会议中的青少年随着午休的来临,I see white power cords everywhere,as the vast majority of attendees brought their Macs and the signature white power cords are snaking down to the ground go grab much-needed electricity for the full day event,哪一个包裹在下午5点。There are a handful of Ubuntu laptops and the random Windows machine here and there,但大部分是Mac电脑。.

That said,I didn't bring power cords. The reason is because I brought the 188金宝博亚洲,and if you've gotten used to a world where you have to constantly feel the anxiety of watching your battery to see how many hours/minutes you have left and what percentage you are charged,消除这种焦虑是一种严重的缓解。.

+马特·卡茨 is taking a 30-day challenge to only use his 188金宝博亚洲,排除所有其他笔记本电脑。I've already talked a lot about how I made the Samsung 188金宝博亚洲 my primary computer, and it's true.I still get my MacBook Air out every once in a while for Photoshop work, but that's happening less and less these days,as more of our content moves to the Web..

All I really need from my computer now is amazing battery life and always-on connectivity, and ChromeOS does exactly that.在这个过程中,我们是非常新的,当然,so while there may be some shortcomings, think about the trajectory of both Android and iOS,and how those platforms are a lot more feature-rich and full of apps versus just a few years ago..

You know that feeling you get when you switch to an unfamiliar platform, and aren't comfortable knowing where things are or how shortcuts work? It's like speaking English (or your native tongue) after the stress of being in a foreign language.Ditching the power cords and being fully on the Web gives me that same relief and it's energizing to know I'm not tethered, but instead,完全移动。 Chrome, bring it to your next event and feel the difference..

Teens in Tech Conference: August 5th at PARC

Teens In Tech's 新孵化器倡议,aimed to help these young entrepreneurs focus and deliver on their ideas. The culminating point of the summer will be this August 5th,when all of the companies are unveiled at a special Demo Day as part of the 2011 conference, held at the historic Palo Alto Research Center,也有来自网络服务世界的顶级演讲者,风险投资与技术.

When I joined the advisory board to Teens In Tech 除了 Teens In Tech blog,近来活动增加,team-ups with TEDxYouth on the East Coast,和 年会,launching this summer's incubator has been very rewarding.I've sat in on strategy sessions as the teens work together to find the best way to outline their product, tweaked Google AdWords campaigns, redesigned email copy, and all the blocking and tackling necessary as companies mature. This year's conference is the biggest one yet,and unveiling the incubated companies is going to be a big win - not just for those going live, but those attending..

Daniel Brusilovsky,CEO and founder of Teens in Tech, has rounded up some A-list sponsors, including GM,微软,Eventbrite,雷德泰克Vapur梅辛和其他人。. Andrew Hsufounder of Airy Labs,Daniela Lapidous, founder of SmartPowerEd,Joey Primiani of Cortex,Michael Simmons,柔性复合体,和更多的实习生分享我同样的愿景,帮助青少年把他们的技术计划提升到一个新的水平。.

Google Displays Big Numbers at GoogleIO.Is It Better??

The first day of Google I/O 2011was focused on Android. For Google, focusing on Android and the mobile OS' growth is a real point of strength, with incredible numbers and increased velocity. .

Hugo Barra,谷歌Android产品管理总监,highlighted growth of Android from the first T-Mobile G-1,shipped 2 1/2 years ago to 100 million Android activations through 2011.Other statistics similarly portray a story of wide reach and penetration in practically every regard: 36 OEMs,215 carriers,45万多名Android开发者在112个不同国家提供310个Android设备。 and doubled a second time,to more than 400 thousand daily now. .

谷歌是一个数据驱动的公司,there's no question they love their numbers,这些都是好的。

Accompanying his comments was a laundry list of brand name apps that have come to be featured in Android Market, many of whom who started on iOS first,搬到了安卓,from Major League Baseball to Pulse and many top game titles. With that kind of intro,no doubt many of us were excited to hear what was to come next in Android, especially as we were caught up on improvements to Honeycomb 3.1 and the new Ice Cream Sandwich. But for the most part, the updates seemed very simple, leading off with enhanced widgets, and enabling devices to act as USB hosts.Ice Cream Sandwich was promised as bringing the best of Honeycomb to phones and tablets, but the response to Honeycomb so far,尤其是在其有限的发布至今,摩托罗拉XOOM一直不温不火。.

As was mentioned to me in a discussion with a small group of Google geeks,in a conference focused on developers,一个人不应该总是期望最终用户能够提供有零售能力的产品。So while all the 5,500+ attendees (myself included) were no doubt excited to test and receive the new 10 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab ahead of its availability on the open market,大部分的亮点都集中在看起来未来的技术上,with midlevel applicability to today's array of products..

The much-anticipated arrival of 谷歌音乐and movie rentals on the Android Market are definitely improvements for all Google-centric users looking to wean themselves off iTunes, but they do seem like they are playing the role of catch-up to both Apple and Netflix, who have significant headstarts and market visibility. It's obvious the music labels are so full of themselves as to be causing headaches for Google,Apple,, AmazonSpotify, but it'd be great to see Google leading the way on some of these spaces instead of filling holes in their lineup against Apple..

Google's software sounds very good, with fun demos of smart machine-learning driven mixes (comparable to that of iTunes),and wireless synching,苹果落后的地方。 .

What I've seen happen in the last two years or so is that lines are being drawn between those who prefer one platform and those another. It's a rare person who gets the chance to try both platforms and come away with a full understanding of one's weakness and another's strengths. 如果Android想要真正被视为市场领导者,not just in quantity, but quality,它还有更大的成长空间,展示最高质量的平板电脑体验,app experience, universal application across devices, and feature leadership - because the other team has the branding and personal experience nailed,数量巨大或不多。.

本周,, Googleis holding their 年度开发者会议on Tuesday and Wednesday in San Francisco.在过去的几年里,这一事件的规模越来越大,与MaCyWork竞争(在史蒂夫·乔布斯主旨时返回)作为预期,users and evangelists banter back and forth about will or won't be announced at the event. For the second year in a row,我会在那里,对我来说,毫无疑问,这是我去年更享受的科技活动之一。而不是去期待那些轰轰烈烈的产品和惊人的惊喜,我期待着听到关于公司在硬件操作系统中持续进行的强有力的更新,both mobile and desktop, taking the company even further away from their initial core focus on search and accompanying ads,but not so extreme as to having us scratching our heads and demanding to find a use case..

Like the aforementioned Apple,Google already does a solid enough job year-round,在它最大的事件之间,保持人们的更新。. The Nexus One was announced在一个特殊的媒体事件中,, 就像蜂窝一样tablet OS.. Google Buzz got its own event, all at the company's Mountain View headquarters where the venue was more comfortable, the expectations were maybe more muted,而且数字肯定更小。But I/O is the crown jewel of conferences for the search and ads giant - a place to update its extended community of geeks on progress to date, while simultaneously encouraging them to help push their next initiatives forward, keeping their attention close while so many temptations lurk elsewhere..

The Sessions and Pods Heavy on Android & Chrome,Light on Social

Chrome,flanked by items deeper in the weeds, like App Engine,Commerce,Geo,开发者工具,APIs,技术讲座和谷歌应用程序。.

Tuesday's Schedule and My Tentative Attendance

The 2010 tracks make one either cringe or wax nostalgic with scads of updates on Google Wave,专门讨论谷歌嗡嗡声API的会议,and an entire track on the Social Web,from PubSubHubbub,Open and Social Web,OpenSocial,以及谷歌与位置和社交游戏的结合。Not in 2011.There's no Social Web track at all. .

Google I/O 2010 was the flashpoint in my transition from iPhone to Android, after the latter OS had just been a curiosity to me.I've extended this Mountain View infiltration into my life with the addition of the Chrome OS powered CR-48,and spend a ton of time with my Samsung Galaxy Tab and Barnes and Noble NOOKColor, both of which run Android.在2010秋季,as I joined my6sense,我们在Android上启动,and have leveraged the Android ecosystem to find partners.2011 looks like it should provide updates on Android helpful to both developers and users, and it may possibly be the starting point for getting Chrome OS equipment to the masses, beyond the initial beta units that I and others like me have been lugging around..

The combination of Android and Chrome OS should be enough for the event. No doubt we'll hear more about numbers, partnerships, coding, development,标准,开放,你有什么。 We may see updates on the Android Market and Chrome Web Store,但它们是主要景点的一、二。篱笆没有惊喜,but straight up execution where the company knows its strengths and won't likely be second guessed.

Curation

At the Search Engine Strategies San Francisco event Wednesday,, Echo's Khris Louxsat down with me and representatives from 超知识,, CBS Interactive(formerly CNETCNN.comto discuss the rise of citizen journalism and social media,与传统新闻交织在一起,and how mainstream media outlets can adapt their practices to include curation as part of their offerings. Our panel's determination could be summarized as saying the ability for the public to launch stories and extend storylines related to realtime has removed the ability for mainstream media to be gatekeepers,进一步需要准确地确定真实性和真实性。And where mainstream media cannot have exceptional access,be it to geography,来源或时机,part of their new role is to discover and highlight high quality content, regardless of its source,实际上,发挥馆长的作用。.

Best exemplified by CNN.COM的报告,citizen journalists are being given a chance to report on equal footing with the mainstream media. While iReport gives these would-be reporters a place to piggyback on a major brand,许多其他人已经把自己的博客,social networks or Twitterto report live, and unlike the traditional approach where media authors would issue a story and call it a day,the life of a story now often starts when it hits the Web,spawning comments, shares and retweets. But as citizen journalists and bloggers are given the same capability to gain visibility, mainstream media's much-celebrated structure to put articles and stories through the vetting process sometimes falls astray in the race to get the story out quickly..

All time,所有提交的约7%是“Vetted"..

A little over two years ago,我强调了在微博时代,不正确的新闻传播速度有多快。(See: 聪明人,Stupid Tweets. .虽然我们很多人都不相信网络上的一切,even if it is in Wikipedia, there remains a need to separate fact from fiction. With so many publications out there reporting on the same information at the same time,没有额外的洞察力,the task of curating the very best of the analysis and repeaters can become a very serious task..

In January,I broached this issue, asking,"" Can You Filter for Quality News Amidst Instant Analysis??"而更早的时候,十二月,highlighting how some news organizations are in fact incentivized for behavior which may lead away from taking the extra effort sometimes required to get the story right.(See: 科技新闻中的抱怨不符合激励措施)

As excited and promotional as I am about the ability for anyone to create and share content,I am equally worried that incentives to promote the discovery of accuracy are not clearly defined,在一个即时分析的世界里,很难找到一个真实的权威。当故事发生在实时平台上时,like Twitter, the person who first reported the earthquake,或出现在一个事件的现场,is only an expert for a short time, and when that topic has faded, new influencers for new stories are needed. wherever it may be,mass media or citizen journalism, and rapidly verify accuracy..

But the sheer volume of feedback can overwhelm even the most well-intended.CNN.com reported one recent popular article achieved more than 30,000个评论-一个实际的不可能适度的人类,leading to the desire to somehow separate the wheat from the chaff and surface the most accurate and supported insight. As one knows, trusting the community is possible,但通常结果是对那些持反对意见的人进行全面的诽谤。See any political blog or sports blog for this particular variety of trench warfare.See any comment stream on Yahoo! YouTubeto see the quality of the masses at work..

and to reward media,be they an established brand or an emerging one,for discovering accurate insights,or simply harnessing them.实时讲故事的世界正在我们眼前发展,在某些情况下,its sheer ephemeral nature promises to introduce as many issues as it solves. We,as readers, creators and sharers, should be working diligently to keep our streams clean and provide value to all those who come in contact with our content..

The CES News River Sends Gadget Blogs Into Overdrive

Google Reader Volume Spikes During CES

Watching the trends in technology news publications is a lot like watching the seasons. It's fairly predictable, and has its ebb and flow. The more sites and stories you read, the greater the value,更多的“liquid"the pace seems to be,as spikes and valleys are smoothed.但更明显的是,从CES的一周到下周,加速度是明显的,, the Consumer Electronics Show, following the hangover doldrums of a post-Christmas holiday.本周消息过剩,随着CES在拉斯维加斯开张,更不用说谷歌在星期二早些时候发布的Nexus一号公告了。最突出的是小工具博客 瘾科技Gizmodo进入超模式,with many other tech outlets looking to draft behind their lead..

While this is not a huge surprise that both blogs are stepping on the accelerator for this event, the data shows just how much more..

In the last few months,it has not been uncommon for me to scan about 1,000 articles a day in Google Reader - skipping most, sharing a few,充分阅读他人。Giving 10 seconds to each story means about 3 hours a day,and 5 seconds a story makes the time needed about 90 minutes..

In the lead-up to Christmas, and the week afterward,my usual forays into Google阅读器,as well as FriendFeedTwitter, were significantly lightened, with news at near standstill,在通行证上看到较少的物品totaling about 700 items a day,and half that on the holidays themselves,or on weekends,刮擦刚刚超过200。

While Engadget delivers an already-aggressive 40-50 stories on a given workday,CES瀑布将它们推到了三倍或四倍的产出,with about 150 new stories flowing.(Keep in mind they are the official blog of CES,这么多的故事无疑是事先准备好的。 Gizmodo,no slouch at about 70 items a day per usual,is keeping apace with just under 150 items a day. This acceleration with both sites,as well as the padding from traditional tech networks that are also following CES,将我的总工作量提高到1左右,300 items a day, double the holiday rate, and 25% ahead of normal..

Gizmodo Doubles Down Efforts for CES

You can always expect spikes around Macworld and other Apple events, and you can expect drops on US-only holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. But there's nothing like CES for pushing the sheer volume of coverage up to a new level.ECEADGET和GISMODO的编辑团队在CES周的协调工作一定是复杂的,and is something to be impressed with indeed..

Of Note: Chris Saad recommends退房 CNET's CES Riveras well for CES News and updates..

Twitter Maturation Continues As They Embrace Developers

AS Twitter从早期采纳者的好奇心发展到成熟的主流现象,该公司正在经历一个备受期待和欢迎的成熟过程,one that comes following the company's highly-visible raise of a significant venture capital round, which valued them at a billion dollars,雇佣来自山谷巨人的受人尊敬的团队成员 Yahoo!!,, Google脸谱网,和最近推出的新功能的平台,包括转发和列表。Today,at LeWeb,, Ryan Sarver,Twitter's director of platform, unveiled even more proofpoints that show the company is moving beyond its shaky relationships with developers (and uptime) and looking forward to a more public, more robust experience..

Over the last two years,我对这项服务的更多公开批评集中在该公司与正常运行时间的斗争中,and lack of transparency with developers, who often got short shrift as Twitter worked to keep its products stable, throttling API access or changing functionality,通常没有警告。The results,in some cases,非常激烈,leading to products being delayed, canceled,或者仅仅是无效。.

Attacking the Web's Beverly Hills and Schenectady Problem

Not too long ago, every new site you joined on the Web forced you to provide a daunting array of details about you in order to join.Full pages of pull-down menus asking about your date of birth, your marital status, your home address and other information was standard. But over the last few years, with advents such as OpenID,, 开放社会,, Facebook Connect,最近,Twitter OAuth,个人身份变得越来越便携-让你登录到一个新网站的专用登录,and reducing your need to store yet another password..

Kevin Marks, vice president of Web services at BT,formerly of Google技术专家,relayed at the Defrag Conference this afternoon that under the old way,公司,after accumulating a high number of users, would often find they had an extremely high number of users responding they lived in either Beverly Hills or Schenectady,New York. Why?Because they were saying their zip codes were either 90210 or 12345.They were lying - sick of answering page after page of personal data for yet another Web site..

"Over the last two years,we worked out the sanitization of protocols,so it could fetch things from one site to another,"马克说。"In that time,OpenSocial is up to 1 billion users.世界各地都在使用这个网站。""

马克打破了真正的身份问题的解决方案分为四块:
  • Me
  • My Friends
  • What We Do
Tools like OpenID and WebFingersolve for"Me",Portable contacts,通过VCART规范的统一,solve for"My Friends",活动流解决“What We Do",以及像AtomPub这样的新协议,PubSubHubbub和鲑鱼正在解决“Flow".如你所知,I have been a big proponent of tools like 胡言乱语,, 鲑鱼以及像脸谱网Connect和Twitter OAuthTM这样的工具,因为它们不仅在站点之间传递数据,还可以更快地在网站之间传递数据。当他们造成了可以被认为是一场革命的时候,它是通过已经发生的简单的进化活动而发生的。.

"所有这些标准都是经验标准,"马克说。"We first did this with microformats. We asked what people are doing already, and agreed we would do the same thing.""

现在,if you do tell companies you live in Beverly HIlls or Schenectady,New York,你真的有更大的机会,也许我们会相信你。.

In a forward-looking presentation at the Defrag Conference this morning,, Stowe Boydpushed attendees to think about how the Web would look by the year 2019,借助于看到过去十年发生的巨大变化。博伊德最激进的评论之一指出,搜索世界正在崩溃,as the problems it initially aimed to solve have been eroded thanks to the information explosion and the corresponding ease of access to social connections in a world of real time.Without saying that social networks would render the established search giants, irrelevant,he suggested,, as he has on his blog frequently in the last few years, that the"flow"will replace the world of Web pages- and change the game on search entirely..

He said people were incentivized to discover breaking news from social friends through networks like Twitter and Facebook,创造新的“real-time Web"interesting.他进一步建议人们如何解释这个新闻来定义“meaning"is what will replace search..

"Search is starting to fail because scarcity has been replaced by infinity,"Boyd said."We are heading toward a world where all the critical information is available publicly,最坏的消息是几秒钟-最多。We will switch to instead relying on finding things through our social connections - engines of meaning, and the source of what is important.""

Assuming social elements are going to trump algorithms and crawlers that power today's engines,Boyd said he believes that the most important dimension is now time, not space - and that for the most part, this dimension is shared..

"We are not sharing space online,we are sharing time,"he said."Our time is increasingly not our own.A shared thread of time will be the norm, and how we will get work done.""

This new shared thread of time,或“flow",as Stowe referred to it,is poised to become the replacement for today's static Web pages,当今社会网络中的一个新要素,他认为可能是“我们文明最具决定性的时刻。""

At the 碎片整理会议in Denver this morning, there was an acknowledgement that social elements are infiltrating practically every aspect of businesses and interpersonal engagement online,但与其他事件不同,which have seen a practical hugfest over the latest apps or services, the morning's speakers expressed a great deal of frustration over trying to find real benefits and utility to all the activity that is happening online.发言者认为今天的工具缺乏上下文,that businesses are too obsessed with having a complete data set and aren't focused enough on the actability on that data, and that many developers are focused on designing apps that simply don't drive benefits..

GNIP,was most direct in his comments,说“the business world doesn't give a (crap) about your lifestream app,"saying that designing yet another application that sorts all your content online is essentially a list of lists - a list of"我的东西或“my friends' stuff",which is cute, but not necessarily valuable in decision making..

GNIP is best known for offering managing data collection as a service. The company has seen some ups and downs over the last 18 months, culminating in a significant layoff in September that saw the company reduce staff - cutting seven heads from the dozen on their roster. Marcoullier said the last few weeks have been"stellar"就生产力而言,even as his clients aren't necessarily looking for the answers to data - just more data..

Is there an opportunity to drive business decisions and revenue for your company?",saying"没有努力,数据是无用的。When you get data,it is a lot of work to do something useful with it,yet market research companies are obsessed with completeness of data.""

Similarly,T.A.McCann,CTO of Gist, said that leading social services,喜欢 LinkedIn,策划了数以百万计的节点追踪数以百万计的关系。But for most,it hasn't yet been clear how these connections can be leveraged to drive real daily utility - beyond suggesting new connections and companies that should be known due to shared interests..

Much of these shared interests have been displayed in social streams including Twitter脸谱网,which despite their meteoric rise in visibility, are still struggling to provide more than a simple flow of updates and links..

Tim Young of SocialCast抱怨,"What I find on Twitter is link vomit,或者将地毯式轰炸与事件联系起来。During the day,I get all these links,问题是我点击链接,没有太多的上下文。Why did they share this and how did it get here?""

Tim called for a new solution to be built that would save traces and paths of content to help communicate new findings to derive value - something made ever more difficult when the most common real time search repository,, 推特搜索,is now hosting a database that can track as few as only two days..

尽管许多人声称,发现这些数据的速度更快,会使我们作为一个物种更有生产力,, Stowe Boyd倾倒在那,saying"生产率提高的神话是失败的世界观,"adding,"people will trade personal productivity for connectedness, and they will accept an interrupt to help somebody in their social connections.""

That's not to say all is dark.Eric of GNIP promised he was still a huge fan of social media, and Stowe pontificated that the rise of the social Web may already be"有史以来最有价值的人工制品.But from a raft of useless lifestreaming applications and a gap between link visibility and link utility, the speakers seem to agree that we have a long way to go from today's promises to tomorrow's solutions..

即使现在微博空间似乎很热,the world of longer-form blogging is still seeing impressive growth, with all major blogging platforms showing greater than 20 to 40 percent growth year over year, and record users, blogs and total readers, according to Compete.com data and a presentation from Google's Rick Klau,产品经理 Blogger, who spoke at Blog World Expo this afternoon.瑞克报道他的平台,博客作者which I use,is now seeing nearly 300,000 words per minute, scaling to 417 million words per month, from more than 10 million content creators..

然而,despite this high usage, many have challenged the platform, saying"blogging is dead". But Rick said that the rise of microblogging didn't necessarily come at the expense of traditional blogging.

Rick said."It is a driver of attention and engagement back to the blog.""

(AT) tins.rklau.com) and has been active since 2001,he reported that Twitter has become the highest traffic generator for his site outside of search,在那张表里,脸谱网和FieldFor也是如此。He suggested rather than trying to fight against the flow on microblogging,拥抱它,and make sure your content is available to these disparate networks, while remembering to engage where it lands..

"The blog tends to be visited by people interested in what you are saying, and the people on Twitter and Facebook are interested in you,通过代理,你在说什么,"he said."I happen to believe that based on what I have seen with my blog for eight years,人们在他们选择的环境中交流是很舒服的。If I force the conversation back to the blog,I will lose the audience who have the eagerness to engage,他们住的地方很舒服。""

里克建议,如果你是脸谱网用户,把你的博客内容拉进脸谱网,让这个新的观众可以使用,who may leave comments much different than those which are native to your site. ly跟踪统计信息,并通过Twitter发送的链接点击您的网站,to help you understand how much the microblogs are impacting your own blog..

Given his background at Google,Rick made it clear that the company's data-driven nature forced decisions, .

"There are very few questions that get asked at Google when I don't have the data to back up an answer,"Rick said."You don't get many opportunities to say"我觉得或“it seems"at Google.""

But in his experience, .

"Don't become a slave to the focus of your blog at the expense of having fun.你可以对各种各样的主题充满激情,"he added..

Blogging and micro-blogging are not a zero-sum game, but can be complimentary.Sending blog content to downstream networks makes that content available to those connections who are more comfortable in their own environment.正如我多次提到的,, your blog is your brand- which Rick echoed by saying that on your blog, you control every pixel,因此,终端用户体验。.

博客需要 adapt to the new world, but aren't antiquated in this new world. It makes sense to participate wherever the content lands and wherever your readers are,没有推动集中在你的网站上的谈话,but there is no substitute for long-form conversations and being passionate.Rick communicated a simple formula:"内容+激情+参与”.And that will make the blog go,even in a world of change..

The Web simply can't get enough funny cat pictures. Or sleeping cat pictures.Or pictures of people failing. The Cheezburger Networkhas grown dramatically, racing to the point where they are seeing a billion page views every four months,用了近两年的时间才达到第一亿。Growing the company on rapid scale is no accident,由于网络已经将其业务目标集中在其客户身上,aiming to remove distractions and obstacles that could hinder potential growth..

Ben Huh,切斯伯格的首席执行官said the company focused not on how many features they could push into the network, but instead on simplicity - letting the users dictate how the business would grow. 他们赚不到十亿美元的利润,or to change the world..

"我们的使命是让人们每天快乐五分钟,"Ben said today at Blog World Expo."我们不断听取听众的意见,'You make us happy,'.When you allow your users to dictate how your business will operate,而且可以长出厚皮,that is how you grow.""

I Has a Hotdogto the FAIL Blog,, GraphJam,There,I Fixed It,E-mails from Crazy People and It Made My Day,the company is trying to reach a broad audience through more sites and more content, based on user feedback. In fact, today they announced a new site featuring sleeping animals,打电话 Daily Squee,这也让人联想到流行的和非网络的。 Cute Overload..

Ben said that human nature has a tendency to admire complexity, but rewards simplicity, and that through introducing complexity,it has an inverse effect on your business' ability to scale.Instead of investing in expensive custom software and hardware,Cheezburger utilizes standard products including 文字出版社,, JS-Kit,, YouTube,Google Apps, cloud storage and open source applications, keeping costs low..

While some of the network's sites may seem fanciful,他们考虑周密,经常提出新的建议,and target those who may not yet be avid fans of the network. while 30 percent of traffic constituted the regulars,另外15%个是球迷,and an elite 5 percent were people who show up every day, multiple times a day.He suggested that businesses focus on the greatest population that could migrate to higher devoted level (in this case the 30 percent),as that will increase the total number of fans, and discourage targeting the site by scaling to the power users, who are typically edge cases..

Beyond keeping its audience happy for 5 minutes at a time,Ben said the company frequently thinks in small time allotments, saying,"如果我想每周工作四个小时,what would I have to do?"and asking,"如果我的用户在网站上有四十秒,what would they want to do?"Key to satisfying these short term visitors?Eliminating distractions and removing barriers..

The goal is to keep the company in touch with what the users wanted, and purging common mistakes that come from within, including ego, pride, assumptions,神圣的母牛,secrets, coverups, and individual reputation. The result is one big fat happy network..
